No-one has ever submitted an image in the RAW file format to a client or competition, images are only judged as being acceptable only after enhancement has taken place.
Image Processing, Editing or Retouching are terms used to describe image manipulation, they are often used as all-encompassing descriptions of the multitude of enhancements that an image needs to go through before being submitted to a client or competition.
It's not the camera’s responsibility to understand where the image is going to be published or printed - that is our responsibility.
So images need to be processed (as we used to do with film and in the printing process) they need to be sharpened, have contrast added, colours enhanced and most of all the dynamic range extended. Most of us know this as HDR (high dynamic range).
As software has evolved over the years and there have been many developments that seem to have been advances. Some seem to be impressive on the surface and viewed from a small frame of reference they can be very convincing, with a greater perspective they will mostly be seen as limited.
